It Looked Easy... Until It Wasn't: Creating Our Digital Short Story

Hey everyone! It’s been a while since my last post. I’m back again—this time with something different and complicated: I, together with my colleagues Derin and Alperen, created a short fictional story for our ICT course. This might look like an easy topic, but trust me, it wasn’t.

In this task, we were expected to create a digital story, which served as an umbrella term for different formats such as PSA (Public Service Announcement), “How to?” projects, and a short fictional story. As soon as I saw the word story, I didn’t even hesitate to decide among three. As long as it is a “short” story no longer than two minutes, we were free to do anything or to choose any topic. Interestingly, all of us are interested in detective-crime theme—meaning that our topic is about a serial killer who not only just kills his victims but also creates “art”, leaving signature marks (a blue rose) everywhere. As for the audio/voice, all three of us dubbed different characters: Derin was the detective, I was the assistant, and Alperen was the narrator of the story.

The procedure was a really tough one to be honest. I took part in creating/writing the script as well as editing the story using the software “CapCut”. Script writing was actually easy and short, so I will talk about the editing process. To begin with, I must say that I have never known anything about editing, let alone using software such as CapCut. This means I needed to learn the CapCut first, then I began editing everything. Thankfully, I have always interested in technology and tools—I did not face any problems learning CapCut. But the editing process… It was painful—just when one problem is solved, another one comes up. Apparently, I can say that it was a long process, taking my days (almost a week) just to finish the editing. However, that doesn't mean I regret creating a video; on the contrary, this was one of the most entertaining task that required high technological skills.

I now say that I am glad doing such a complex task because I also learnt how to edit, unfortunately at this age :D. Additionally, I would probably give this task to my future class as it is a hard yet entertaining & fruitful task—improving technological, problem-solving, and creativity skills.

As I repeatedly mentioned, we have created this short story as a team, together with Derin and Alperen. You can visit their blogs and also check out the short story of ours.
